MAKE A PLAN TO VOTE

Thank you for participating! Birds can’t vote, but as one of the millions of Americans who care about them—you can.

In addition to the high-profile federal races, there are state and local elections this year that will have an impact on what happens next: on the future of our communities, habitats, and the birds we love. The decision makers that will take office will have an important influence on the ways that laws are written and enacted at every level of government.

When it comes to voting, be sure you have your ducks in a row. Here are some questions to help you make your plan (links will open in new tabs or windows):

Have you registered to vote?

Registration is the first step to becoming a voter. Have you checked in to make sure that you are registered and that your voting registration is active and updated to your current address? Some states let you register even on Election Day. Check your voter registration status and learn more now.

How are you voting?

Absentee or Early Voting: You may be eligible to vote prior to Election Day as an absentee or early voter. State laws vary, so be sure to seek out information directly from your state’s election officials, or contact your local election office for help.

Heading to the polls on Election Day: Be sure you know where your polling place is located and what the hours are, and have a plan for how you will get there.

  • Search your polling place by state here. (National Association of Secretaries of State)
  • Some states require voters to show identification (ID) to vote, so know your state’s voter ID requirements (USA.gov) and be prepared to bring relevant documentation.
  • Prepare your supplies: Pack up what you need at your polling place in the event there is a long wait or inclement weather (comfy shoes, an umbrella, binoculars for bird watching, and maybe some snacks are all helpful ideas).

Are you spreading the word, and bringing friends and family along?

Bring along your flock! We can help inspire our friends, families, and fellow bird lovers to join us at the polls. Help others make their own voting plans, and share these resources:

  • If you haven’t yet, take our Pledge to Vote
  • Share the I Bird, I Vote pledge and voting plan guidance with your contacts through email, text message, Facebook, and X/Twitter. (We’ve made it easy, just use our share page).

Once you have made your voting plan and know when and where you're going to vote, you can be a leader in your community simply by encouraging three or more friends to vote.
